Last year Orapan was absolutely nuts about a boy in her class named Pra-ake. Pra-ake wasn't as tall or handsome as some other guys in the class, but he had eyes that seemed to be laughing all the time, and he had a charming way of speaking. Lots of girls thought he was cute. Orapan came to class early every day so she could sit close to him. Then she would always stare at him when she was supposed to be listening to the teacher. She wrote hundreds of notes for him but never sent any of them. She made up all kinds of stories in her mind about how happy her life would be with Pra-ake at her side. Between classes, if Pra-ake was sitting with his friends at one table, Orapan could usually be seen "studying" at the next table. She could have spoken with him many times, but she never could think of what to say when the time came.
At the end of the term Orapan found out that Pra-ake had to move to another province. |

Notes On The English In "Orapan's Big Crush"
- Look at this sentence:
"Orapan came to class early every day so she could sit close to him."
Lots of students wrongly say "for" instead of "so" in this kind of situation. The rules are:
>> "For [a noun / gerund]" ("He went for a dental cleaning.")
>> "to [verb]" ("He went to have his teeth cleaned.")
>> "so [sentence]" ("He went to the dentist so he could have shiny white teeth for his date with Julia.")
- When it says, "She could have spoken with him many times," "could have V3" means ability in the past to do something, but not doing it. She could have, but she didn't.
- Where it says, "Orapan could usually be seen 'studying'," this is passive voice, something that is very common in English but not so in Thai. The rule for passive voice is BE + V3. Passive voice is not a tense; it can be changed to any tense you want. In this case, "could" takes the past tense, and after "could" always comes a verb with no tense, so we must use "be" (not "is" or "was" etc.).
- Also, there are quotes around the word "studying" in that same sentence. Why? Usually quotes are to show what people said, but here they are used as a writing convention to show that Orapan called what she was doing "studying", but really it was something else (peeking at Pra-ake!). Sometimes in speaking people do the same thing (show that something is not really what they are calling it) by holding up two curved fingers from each hand and twitching them like rabbit ears to imitate quotes as they say something, such as, "My boss is going to a [finger twitching begins] business meeting [finger twitching ends]." They mean that whatever the boss is really doing, it isn't a business meeting. Maybe he's going to a golf course, or meeting his secret girlfriend.
